On Wednesday last week we decided, rather last minute, to go to the seaside the next day and possibly stay over for a night. We got some things together and packed up the van in the evening and then got up at silly o'clock on Thursday morning (erm, 5am!) to hopefully miss the traffic and get to the seaside nice and early.
We arrived at Bracklesham Bay at about 8.30am after a quick detour to buy some supplies. I had invited my friend Helen to join us in the van for bacon butties and she just beat us to the car park. I had to stop for diesel and spotted her driving past just as we were leaving the petrol station! The weather was a bit grotty but we went for a wander on the beach after breakfast and Helen got some lovely photos of Pippin (and a bacon buttie!)
Pippin investigating something on the beach!
The weather started to brighten up a bit so we decided to walk to East Wittering along the beach. It's a nice little place and has a very good Butcher's shop. We had an ice cream and wandered back to the van.
There were lots of amazing beachside houses - I am so envious. I would love to live by the seaside! This is a gate to a little private garden on the beach. Nice!
The combination of getting up super early and lots of sea air meant that an afternoon nap was required! When we woke up, an ice cream van had arrived in the car park. Hmmmmm - 2 ice creams in a day? Well, it's not often we get scorching hot weather. It'd be rude not to....
We could see Portsmouth from where we parked so I decided to attempt to paint the view! It was very hazy and you could only just make out the shapes of the skyline.
We went for another walk on the beach before cooking some dinner on the Cobb. Pippin had a dip in the sea!
I love the reflections on the wet sand:
I couldn't resist taking a photo of my shadow - wish my legs were really this long haha!
The next day we decided to head to West Wittering beach nice and early to beat the crowds. We stopped off in East Wittering to stock up on some food. There weren't many other people around when we arrived.
We had a cup of tea and a danish pastry for breakfast and then went for a walk along the beach and round East Head.
I picked up quite a few shells on our beach walks so I decided to sketch one of them. I did do another one but it turned out really bad so I'm not sharing it! I am quite happy with this one though:
We ate our very tasty 'Witterings' pasties (bought from the Butcher's at East Wittering - they were open before 8am which was really handy. They had lots of lovely looking pies and other goodies in their shop) for lunch and then went for another walk, out of the entrance to the car park and to the end of the road where there is a litte cafe. We had more ice cream ;-) which we ate under the shade of a nearby tree. Very civilised.
I went in search of the brightly coloured surf boards I had photographed when I was here a couple of years ago with Helen. I don't think I posted the photo I took. Helen's is here. Different surfboards this time of course but just as colourful!
We had fish and chips for dinner before heading back home with a van full of sand!
